Breeding Labrador Retrievers
Do you know the medical background of each parent or have you
selected a mate for your dog because a friend of yours has one. Do you know the
individual characteristics of the sire and dam to have a good idea of what the
characteristics of the pups will be? Have you thought about the general idea of
the betterment of the breed?
I don't want to be cynical, but I do want you to take a look at the
responsibility of bringing a litter of pups into the world and introducing each
pup to a family who will love it and make part of their family for 12 to 15
years. We have seen the heartbreak of folks when they have to part with their
Lab. People really get attached to these critters! Major health issues are not
needed to complicate this relationship.
Do have the facilities to house and care for this litter for 7 to 9 weeks? Mama
needs to be fed 3 times a day before weaning, and you should be aware of the
complications that could lead to feeding 10 pups every 3 hours.... been there,
done that... it's not pretty! Do you have ability (financial, if you don't do it
yourself), to worm the pups 3 times, give the first "puppy shot" injection
(series of three), clip the toenails weekly. Of course you have certified that
both parents are free from eye, elbow and hip problems do you know what EIC is?

The Positive Side
OK..... all that said, raising a litter of Labrador pups is one of the greatest,
most rewarding things you can do. Labs are consistently good mothers and do not
exhibit the birth problems of some other breeds. Labs are very popular,
and you probably have enough friends and relatives that will want a pup. So if
you still want to breed your Lab, maybe we can help a little.
