If your dog has an encounter with a porcupine it can be a very expensive visit to the vet. If the quills have punctured the eyes or into the chest cavity, a vet is the only way to go. However, a face full of quills, though daunting, can be removed at home.
A needle nosed pliers
Using the pliers grasp the quill close to the skin and placing a
thumb and finger on each side of the quill, pull it out! There is not a barb,
but the point has small rearward facing scales that will resist removal. Do not
cut off the quill to let the air out, this is an old wives tale, as is the
pouring white vinegar on the quill to soften it
