Thyroid Problems

TYD - Hypothyroidism refers to any condition in which the thyroid gland produces too little thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disease in dogs. Symptoms may include weight gain with no change in diet, feeling run down, slow, depressed, sluggish, cold, or tired and having dry skin and hair loss, constipation, muscle cramps, slow heart rate and infertility. Some patients have a swelling in the front of the neck due to thyroid enlargement (a goiter). In most cases, hypothyroidism is caused by a condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, in which a patient’s immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid. Hypothyroidism can also be caused by treatment of hyperthyroidism or by certain medications, and it may be present from birth. The thyroid may temporarily become under active after pregnancy or if it is inflamed due to a viral infection. Finally, a problem with the pituitary gland can cause hypothyroidism, refers to any condition in which the body has too much thyroid hormone.  These hormones regulate the body's metabolic rate and affect every system in the body.

Hyperthyroidism is rare in dogs but is the most common endocrine (hormone) disorder that affects cats.

The onset occurs most commonly in middle to old-age cats with a reported range between 4 and 22 years. Five percent of these cats develop hyperthyroidism before age eight. The breed or sex does not appear to be a predilection.

 Symptoms may include:

  • Weight loss
  • Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Increased bowel movements
  • Fine brittle hair (hair loss)
  • Muscular weakness
  • Increased food consumption
  • Vomiting
  • Increased water consumption
  • Increase activity
  • Tremors
  • Labored breathing
  • Loss of appetite

Racing heart is common in cats. Heart mummers and high blood pressure can occur.

Diagnosis:

There are no symptoms unique to thyroiditis. If the thyroiditis causes slow and chronic thyroid cell damage and destruction, leading to a fall in thyroid hormone levels in the blood, the symptoms would be those of hypothyroidism If the thyroiditis causes rapid thyroid cell damage and destruction, the thyroid hormone that is stored in the gland leaks out, increasing thyroid hormone levels in the blood, and produces symptoms of thyrotoxicosis, which are similar to hyperthyroidism.  A veterinarian will perform blood tests to check the TSH levels.  Other blood tests will be performed to conclude the baseline prediction of the out of normal range TSH levels in the first test.

Treatment:
Hypothyroidism is easier to treat than hyperthyroidism.  A veterinarian will you’re your pet on a synthetic thyroid hormone for the rest of it’s life.  A veterinarian will look at 3 alternatives with hyperthyroidism. The vet will prescribe an anti-thyroid drug, surgically remove the thyroid or treat with radio active iodine.  Amber Technology’s TYD was created specifically to normalize the thyroid gland.  In cases of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism it has proven itself effective to help the thyroid gland stop over producing or under producing the thyroid hormones.
