The difference between a mediocre dog and a magnificent dog is the amount of training and relationship the dog has experienced. There is no greater reward than to see the devotion and dedication expressed by your Lab once they understand what you want them to do.
Training Labs - Basic Obedience

Starting at the 49th day of life, a puppy is ready to begin learning what it takes to be a good dog. Seven weeks is the ideal time to start basic obedience training. By the time your pup is 12 weeks old they should respond to commands to sit, stay, come and heel. They are like a little sponge at this stage, soaking up all up from the Alpha figure in their life (That's You). That does not mean that a dog can't learn if they are not a puppy, we have successfully taught old dogs new tricks at the age of 5 years.

Remember, that 10 lb puppy cuddled in your lap will be 70 lbs in a short time and still want to lay in your lap!
